About This NYSED Social Work Board Approved In-Person Workshop/Live-Interactive Webinar (4-CEUs)

You can participate in this training In-Person or via Live-Interactive Webinar (for those working remotely). Our Live Webinars are Approved by the NYSED Social Work Board as Face-to-Face contact hours because the sessions occur in real-time. This is a 2-Day Training, Thursday, November 14th and Monday, November 18th: 12:00pm to 2:00pm on both days. Certificate of Completion will be awarded upon completing both sessions.

Power To The People— Social Construction Theories provides a framework for understanding individuals, groups, families, communities and organizations. In this module, emphasis is placed on theories of empowerment and the role of the social work advocate. Specific attention is drawn to how social work professionals can leverage/effect change within the context of groups, families, organizations and communities. The impact of inequality on differences in gender, race, class, ethnicity, and sexual orientation, and implications for the professional social work advocate to ameliorate these inequalities will be addressed. Practitioners will consider best advocacy strategies and practice methods for clients’ diverse needs.

Learning Objectives

  • Define Social Construction Theory.
  • Apply principles of empowerment theory to social work practice.
  • Identify ways in which individual/client(s) can effect change in their community through advocacy.
  • Identify ways that the professional social work advocate can provide interventions within multiple levels (groups, organizations, community).
  • Apply concepts of social construction theory to their unique professional areas (i.e. clinical practice, programming, administration, community organizing, social policy).
  • Identify the role and significance of diversity and its impact on human development, behavior and values, especially relating to differences in gender, race, class, ethnicity, and sexual orientation, vulnerable and at-risk populations.
  • Consider best practice methods for meeting clients’ diverse needs.

About The Instructor

Trélan Nicole Holder, MS, LCSW is a skilled psychotherapist with extensive years of counseling experience in mental health and human services. Trélan attained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Clark University, her Master of Science Degree in Social Work from Columbia University, and a Certificate in Bioethics and Medical Humanities from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Cardozo Law School. Additionally, her clinical pursuits include: a postgraduate certificate in psychodynamic psychotherapy training from the NYU Institute for Psycho-analytic Education. Trélan is an Adjunct Lecturer at Columbia University School of Social Work.
